Team building is an important factor in any environment; its primary objective is to bring out the best in the members involved to ensure self development, positive communication, leadership skills and the ability to work closely together as a team to solve problems. It is the process of turning a group of individual contributing employees into a cohesive team or a group of people organized to work together to meet the needs of their customers by accomplishing their purpose and goals. It is also an idea of job design in which employees are viewed as members of interdependent teams instead of as individual workers.
Team building ranges from daily interaction of employees when carrying out specific assignments, simple bonding exercises to complex simulations, multi-day team building retreats designed to develop a team which could be group assessment and group-dynamic games, structured exercises and activities led by team members for task completion.
The effectiveness of an organization will depend on the extent to which the individuals and groups work as teams. The major determinant for a successful team work include; motivation, effective communication, problem solving ability, good leadership style and timely conflict resolution. It could also involve both formal and informal activities to enhance its efficiency; formal activities like a discussion session led by a facilitator and informal discussion shared during a casual sit out or dinner. The extent to which the people in a group are able to develop a common vision and right attitude toward work will help groups of people to emerge as teams.
Communication has proven to be an important pre-requisite for building a successful team. It keeps the team consistently informed and updated on changes in administrative structures, new products or services offered, marketing strategies, deadlines for task completion and many others. Another point of consideration is based on systematic approach starting with clarity, purpose and aims of a given task, which will further evolve to supportive development of ideas, listening, receiving and giving feedback, identifying and use of individual skills and that of others. This will influence the development of a team because working among group of people will get work done efficiently and effectively.
